I know a lot of people have mainstream projects on the go. What are your mainstream projects? If you don't want to mention the project let us know what type of project it is tangible product, service, etc.
We started our mainstream division last year and have been building it up. Nothing to show off yet. Working hard building up our backends. Our goal for our two main projects is to create a destination for surfers (I know, not an easy task).
I've made a lot of contacts in mainstream both VC guys and entrepreneurs that have done very well for themselves. One thing I've learned is everybody has ideas. The value comes in how you execute the idea. I know that sounds obvious but a lot of people feel their ideas are worth something. There are a lot of BAD ASS projects being worked on. No matter how amazing and unique you may think your idea it's probably not that unique so you need to really knock it out of the park. Don't sit back and rely on the idea to propel your success your execution is going to be the key.
There seem to be three areas mainstream investors and companies look for in terms of valuing a mainstream entity.
- technology you've built (often times they probably have a different use for it than you intended)
- user base
- revenue base
Revenue Base is the one most companies struggle with which is why companies that can fund themselves until they are profitable can really kill it. I met a start up this week that is really awesome imo but they are running low on $$$ and have had to change their focus and direction because of it.
