I think that is way too passive.
Don't say "I kind of need the money." It doesn't matter if you need the money, the deal was the deal. Don't say "I don't want to dip into savings." That doesn't even matter. Don't ask "when can you have me paid back?" That doesn't matter either, payback date has come and gone.
Offer a reminder of the terms. Say that you are disappointed. And you hope that this can be resolved before you are left with no other option to take steps that neither of you want to happen.
I don't care who you are, $10,000 is a lot of money. Don't be a pussy about it, it's your money. Get it back.
