I feel ya, but it doesn't matter.
You don't get to order a custom anything without a deposit. Try it with any product you choose. Order a custom motorcycle, or custom flooring, custom paint for your Escalade.... anything.
The reason for the deposit is, if the customer flakes or changes their mind, that deposit is
not getting refunded. It pays for the work already done. You're paying for a designer's time, and if his time has already been spent working on something custom for you, he can't very often make it useful for a different customer that
will pay.
I used to work 100% without taking deposits. But I was younger and dumber.
