I was using one of those just recently (optical mouse died) and the ball picks up dirt, which then coates the four little wheels that pick up the ball movements. The mouse stops responding. You have to disassemble the thing and try to get the strips of dirt off the wheels, which is not easy. I don't know how we lived with those things until optical mice arrived.
