Vincent von Gogh is also known in the art world as gay and seriously schizo. He had a crush on his very much straight friend and one time housemate Gauguin. Gauguin not being able to reciprocate his feelings for him (even though von Gogh didn't truly express his love for him) and then leaving him drove Vincent nuts which I think led him to cut his ear.
But I still think he is a genius who deserved his posthumous fame.
