When someone says to you, "I'm going to kill your mother slowly while you watch", there is a meaning behind that which you react to.
Every culture has different things that they react to.... Try yelling the "N" word in the middle of harlem a couple of times. Or go to China and tell someone to go "F their mother", or whatever. Words have the meanings that we as a society have collectively decided to assign to them, so that everybody knows what everyone else is saying.
Sorry to get on you about that, but it always irritates me when people say that phrase and ignore common sense in a interactive society. If "words were just words", then just babble nonsense and see how well you get along and get things done with other people.
