It was just reported yesterday during one of the games that that figure is now upwards of 90 million in the US, although that figure sounded a little high to me. They said it was largely thanks to Beckham making the move to play for LA.
Whatever the number is it's high, much higher than it was 5 years ago. What this means to me is that soccer in the US is in fact growing a lot of grassroots depth, and out of all those millions of kids now playing the US is going to have stronger and stronger teams in future.
The rest of the world mocks the US over their constantly weak showings? Well guess what, you just poked the sleeping giant.
