Outlaws Motorcycle Club leaders arrested; one dead after raids - Jun 2010
(CNN) -- A member of the Outlaws motorcycle gang was killed in a shootout in Old Orchard, Maine, as authorities tried to execute a search warrant as part of a federal racketerring indictment, a spokesman for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Eplosives said.
Meanwhile, the national president and other top Outlaws leaders were among 27 bikers arrested in a series of raids. They were named in a federal racketeering indictment out of Virginia which also alleged crimes including attempted murder, kidnapping and assault.
The Outlaws are an organized criminal enterprise that involved itself in a number of illegal activities, the indictment states. The acts of violence and conspiracy charges are related to the Outlaws' efforts to gain territory from rival motorcycle gangs, most notably the Hells Angels.
The Outlaws are involved in the production, transportation and distribution of methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana, according to the department.
