Kennedy had a major charisma, that's why people remember him, kind of like Bill Clinton, those were "people's presidents" attracting even people who don't usually give a shit about politics
I doubt Vietnam would end up differently, McNamara might be one of the smartest people in the history yet he failed completely
It's estimated that about 2 tons of explosives in average were wasted to kill one Vietkong
It's the same thing as now with Afghanistan - make an overkill, invest heavily, make a major blow and then pray that it works out
No one has the balls to make it, if it wouldn't work out the public is gonna start riots, yet it would be a better solution then making it half assed for 10 years and waste billions of dollars
