found this online and thought back to our confab about exposure
"There are 4096 tones in a greyscale RAW image...If you divide the histogram in to 4 sections, the section on the far right (highlights) has 2048 tones, right from centre has 1024 tones, left of centre has 512 tones and far left - in the shadows has only 256.
So, by over exposing slightly, you are increasing your tonal range and therefore the final post processed output of the image."
