My friend left his phone in the room when we checked out and they did everything in their power to deny us getting it back.
They insisted other people had already checked-in (damn, that's fast!). They said three different maids had already been in the room. They refused to call the phone. They refused to ask the maid and said just take it as a loss. They said the maid cannot remove things from the room, so going to ask her in the hallway wouldn't help. They advised us not to go up to the room ourselves.
After that string of BS, it was shift change at the security desk time and a new guy called the phone, the maid picked up, she had it in her possession (out of the room) and we met her and got it back.
Sounds like the first employee probably was told by the maid about the phone, wanted to keep it and told the maid bring it to him, and denied to help us.
