there are plenty of businesses with top names selling in the 7-8 figure range. there are domains selling as standalone assets in the 7-figure range as well. a good resource for tracking domain name sales is

how long it would take to see a return on investment of course is very difficult to predict. just farming the natural type-in's would be a good start-- developing the ultimate tits network/site etc. would be next level with the category killer on one's team.
