first and foremost, educate. Even thought he likely has already heard it all in school....detail out the health issues, the costs, etc ( can't believe how much a 2 pack a day habit must cost these days).
I've never been a smoker. My brother did when he was a kid...my parents forbade it from their premises. They found a pack in a jacket a few weeks later and took him to volunteer a few days in a hospice for terminally ill folks...many who had cancer, emphysema, etc.
With my two boys, i refused to wash clothes that smelled of smoke and withheld allowances and made them skip family outings (somewhat grounded) if I ever found signs of smoking. Went through it with my youngest around the age of 15 or so. My oldest didn't mess with it much until he was over 18. In both cases, it was always more about what the kid they were doing and not so much their own idea. Neither of them smoke now, thank goodness. Course I'm uber sensitive to the smell. They used to have a friend (after they both were 18) who would come over and smoke outside in the lower part of the house. With all the doors and windows closed and from over 100 feet away, I would smell it and say something cause I thought someone was smoking in the house.
Good luck.
