depends on who you ask...
i'm sure most are fakes -- but the unconscious mind obviously works overtime... a classic example is driving a car -- 99.9% of your decisions are unconscious decisions... conscious mind can only focus on about 7 items at a time... when you get into a relaxed state -- and can close down your conscious thinking -- the unconscious mind comes to the forefront... the brain is very efficient... it's kindof like your computer -- you have all kinds of system processes multitasking behind the scenes -- the actual pixel interface accounts for only a small % of the actual code... just like you can learn to dance or tie your shoe -- you can manipulate your unconscious process also...
if you want to quit smoking tho... or something like that -- i'd say you would get better results with meditation -- unless the errr shrink instructed your unconscious mind to discover how to quit smoking -- for you to focus on the advantages of being a non-smoker and to focus on the disadvantages of smoking... to focus on why you smoke -- how it makes you feel -- etc. etc... Most people can do that on their own without a therapist -- but some people don't have an open mind -- so they get stuck in patterns and habits and never grow up...
