The 70-200 L IS f2.8 II is very very good. For portrait I would always prefer my 50mm or 80mm L f1.2
The f1.2 lenses are very expensive though, the 1.4 will be enough usually...
But if you need to choose one, get the 70-200 first, just make sure it's the II (new version). It's auto focus is amazing...
