That's how the limited release thing works usually.
When a movie has a "Special Sneak Preview" the week before its official release, that always 100% means that the studio is confident they have a good movie, and want to get some word of mouth going.
Sometimes, they can be surprised by an unlikely hit, but the studio execs know when they have a good movie, or a pile of dogshit they need to sweep under the rug and hope for some good DVD profits.
