Of course having clean air and water is not a bad thing. "Getting off" oil this century is probably impossible though. It is required for so many things no one (not even you) wants to give up.

Also, going into the next couple decades China will need unprecedented amounts of energy to support their enormous population. Currently China imports 1/3rd of it's oil. That figure will likely increase to 50% or more by 2020. Using alternative sources of energy and limiting their reliance on foreign oil is critically important to them. Unlike the US, who has enough domestic energy sources to not have to import any oil, China has no military presence in oil producing middle eastern countries. This is also why China has maintained relations with Iran.
