I have some semi-high traffic WP sites. Though none do 40k/day I have some that do 20k/day and they don't have any load issues.

I guess it would depend on server specs, what kind of plugins (if any) you had running on the site. Mine use minimal plugs and perform fine.

If you are experiencing load time issues, there are cache plugins and such to cut down on the resources that it requires.
