Delhi scrambles to save India from national embarrassment

A massive cleanup and fix-it operation at the athletes village in Delhi, India, has significantly eased the panic the Commonwealth Games might be severely compromised, or perhaps scrubbed altogether.

Canadian team officials said Thursday they believe efforts to clean and make fully operational residential suites they had deemed "unlivable" just a few days ago has put things on a "positive track."

"We felt today we turned a corner," said Scott Stevenson, director of sport for Commonwealth Games Canada (CGC), during a teleconference with Canadian media. "We are starting to feel as though this is going to happen and (feel) as though it's going to be a good Games."

That had been put in serious doubt when a site inspection earlier this week revealed a lack of functioning toilets, running water and electrical fixtures and a thick layer of construction dust in the living quarters for Canada's 255 athletes.
