I sometimes go on tangents, but rarely write more than 5 to 10 words in a post. I always try to get 130 to 160 characters in the meta.
Common theory is that it makes more SEO sense to write about 100 words or so. My theory is that a large majority of posts are garbage and cause search hits to bounce. That if you write less, you'll likely get more page views and build loyalty because you're not insulting your readers with crap!
As a disclaimer, I launched on 7/16 and have only been getting about 400 search hits/day over the past few days, which is way lower than what I feel I should be getting, so there is good chance that I have no clue what I'm talking about.
