You didn't make it clear what sort of "adult site" your friend wanted to start - that's why the advice so far is a bit general. I would agree with Bec though that he (or she - oops ) should learn the ropes by promoting other people's sites before investing any money in their own membership sites if that's the way they want to go.
The adult business is like any mainstream business in it's core fundamentals - you need to know a fair bit about it before trying to go it alone. You wouldn't start your own plumbing business before you'd ever learnt to fit a tap now would you?
Treat the adult business the same way. Learn about how to generate traffic, convert into sales, etc . . so I think some simple blogs would be a good way to start - don't expect to make fortunes, just use it as a learning curve for now.
