George Washington refused to run for a second term. Thomas Jefferson envisioned that EVERYBODY would serve one term. It was supposed to be our duty as citizens to be a Senator or Representative at one point in our life.

George Washington President 1789-1797 that was two terms, he wished to retire but chose instead to stay and help the founding nation come together. Then he died three years later at Mt. Vernon. Jefferson likewise served two terms 1801-1809.
