So, I give my son the chore of cutting the grass today, since it's nice out. My son is 9, and has a friend in the neighborhood who is 12. His friend happens to be black. So, as my son is starting to cut, his friend shows up. Within minutes, I look out the window to see my son standing by as his friend cuts the grass.
This isn't the first time, either. Earlier in the summer, my neighbor hired my son to cut their grass while they were on vacation. Sure enough, my son had his friend cutting the grass for him.
In all honestly, the fact of the matter is that my son's friend is very helpful. He's always asking me if there's anything I want him to do. Plus, I know he wants my son to come down to his house to play, and I think the reason he jumps in and helps with my son's chores is so they can go play faster.
It's just kind of funny(?) that my white son keeps getting his black friend to do his work for him. In fact, a car drove by a minute ago, and the guy was staring at my son watching over his friend's work.
In my son and his friend's eyes, there's no involvment of race, no thoughts of slavery. To them, it's just a friend helping another friend with his chores. But knowing the history of slavery and the such, it just strikes me as, I guess, humorous to see it unfold.
And I mean this only as a funny observation; not endorsing slavery, not meaning to offend anyone. So, take this post lightheartedly.
