Not necessarily true, although it helps.
I have old FH blogs which were never submitted to directories (mainly because Twan won't take any FH blogs other than those on his own FHs), so I linked to them from my thumblogger ones and some of them are doing a lot better in in the SEs than the ones linking to them.
Do a search for some of your thumblogger blogs. I bet that the first listing you will find will be to one of Twan's directories, not to the blog itself.
