Empathy is actually FEELING what the other person feels. Sympathy is understanding where they come from at a more logical level.
I think a better way of saying it is that those willing to consider other possibilities may find faults in their own understandings and thus be able to gain knowledge from it. This leads to a wiser person. I think of intelligence as the throughput/capacity to think, not necessarily how wise they are. Someone can have a high intelligence but very little common sense.
Of course, just having an open mind doesn't help if you can not evaluate and come to rational conclusions.
