as a german i can say that there have been decades of discussions about the involvement of the regular army (Wehrmacht) in the cruelties commited by the Third Reich. the basic outcome is: black sheep are everywhere
but about the crimes the SS commited there's not much doubt - if someone needed to be shot - jews, gypsies, gays, poles, russians or whoever - they were there. let the people dig their own graves and then shot them. everyone who was not arian was an "untermensch" to them. and careful if you agree, you can fall in that category pretty easily.
as someone who lost part of his family due to this war and as someone who is confronted with the unpleasant history of his home country over and over again, i do not take things like this lightly.
