I'd have to agree that the guy's not too bright.
But there is some truth in his assertion that at least some foreign SS (military) volunteers were (so they believed) fighting for the freedom of their own countries. If you haven't done so already, read up on what life was like Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania between August of 1940 and June of 1941 and you'll appreciate why those people were ready to do a deal with Satan himself if it meant preventing Stalin from coming back.
