Of course if it's a small niche you really have to understand it. A general niche is easier, for instance I'm more into Penthouse than Barely Legal and seemed to have done well shooting teens .

But you still need to understand a major niche. I see so much shot by people who are clueless about what the niche is, even the big ones, it's clear they just point and hope for the best. Even copying others is hit and miss if you don't know what to copy. Then it's just another cloned scene like 1,000 others.
