I remember once someone spammed one of my sites with xrumer in similar way. I'm not sure why and who did this, I did not order it and it did not look like an attack either - was smooth with no abuses coming my way, may be was just someones mistake. But that site started to get traffic from google after that. I never advertized that site in any other way. I can't say the traffic is big, but it's like 200 hits every day for 4 or 5 years already...

The effectiveness is on the technique. All though I can't share EVERYTHING, it is important and helps is you have 2-3 sets of keywords to rank for.
I'm not sure if what you are talking about was xrumer. It seems like it was something else. But who knows. I don't have it set up to my own sites because why would you want 10,000 links from the same few ip's and sites...? I'm pretty sure all of us prefer our backlinks to be diversified. Or at least I hope everyone knows that.
