Several years ago I got a letter from my bank telling me that they had information that one of the checks I had recently deposited was going to bounce. I call down and find out which check they are talking about. They tell me and I look it up. It was a from a solid company that had never bounced a check to me. I go down to the bank to find out what they know. Maybe they really know something I don't. The manager pulls me aside and discreetly says, "That check is from an adult company. We find that most of those kinds of checks bounce and are no good." I say, "Really, about 90% of the checks I deposit are from adult companies and I have never had one bounce." He then says, "Oh, I didn't know that."
So a few days later I go down and deposit a few new checks and the teller informs me that there will be a 5-7 business day hold on my checks to make sure they clear. They tell me it will be every check I deposit that gets that treatment. When I ask why the manger comes out and tells me that I could be a "higher risk" customer so they need to do this to protect themselves. I then say, "For the last 3 years you've not made me wait and I have never bounced a check. But then you find out I do work for some adult companies and now all of a sudden I'm a high risk account? That bullshit." He just apologized, but didn't change his mind.
The next day I went down and closed that checking account and my savings account. I'm no high roller, but the savings account had a decent balance in it because I was saving to buy a house. The manager actually had the balls to come out and tell me that he would love for me to stay as a customer and even if I did decide to take my checking account to another bank they would like me to keep my savings account there and that they might even be able to get me a little better interest rate. I said,"But my savings account is full of filthly money from those adult checks you seem to think are high risk, but never bounce. So you feel dirty cashing my checks, but have no problem keeping my money once its cleared?" He just stood there and looked at me with a vacant look.
I closed the accounts and moved on.
BTW the bank in question was Washington Mutual. So when they crashed and burned in the housing collapse I wasn't sorry to see them go. They were shady mother fuckers.
