Interesting thread, this is just how society goes. Growing up in Vancouver, Canada it was always about who had the best, the biggest, the newest, the trendiest. Showing off and bragging is natural there.
Fast forward to the total opposite in Eastern Europe (where I live abroad now), and here if you have something nice, and you don't brag, nor tell anyone - they just see, right away they hate out of jealousy.
So I really don't know which is better, either/or of the cases.
