It was explained to me that the "ga" version is a sign of brotherhood or friendship. The "ger" version is a sign of disrespect or racism.
And this was by some dudes that are very proud of their race and may or may not have been involved in gang-related-dealings.
I spent the rest of the night freaking out the white people I was with using the "ga" version to address my new ethnic friends.
