I have a blog that gets 1 million page views a month and it was running slow, constantly crashing my server, it was a wordpress issue. I added a cache plugin and no more crashes. Support was quick to get me fixed up no problems and I KNOW I am using more than my alloted resources.
I just wished it was easier getting FFMPEG and other modules to work on the VPS.

I was pretty happy with Dreamhost too, for several years but then they destroyed my traffic. I thought the same thing you did, and didn't understand why everyone kept hating on them until I went through it myself. Some lessons just have to be learned the hard way.
