If you want something which have more options then wp I think is better option to try drupal insteed of joomla. Joomla is perfect for sites for small mainstream business, like selling wine ot something, or small offices, which can be operated by unskilled staff once when their specific template has been made. But joomla produced very bad code, joomla is not good optimizied, has many unnecessary things, which can be user friendly but completly not needed for skilled webmasters etc. I have made few joomla sites for others because it's easy to teach them how to operate the site, but for me I'm considering to learn drupal. I know exactly what you mean and if you would like to made site for you I would go with drupal, better core, better optimized, very seo firendly. For traffic wise drupal can handle high traffic sites much better then joomla. MTV UK, whitehouse gov has made in drupal and few others high traffic sites. Security in drupal is better then in joomla. Although, it's easier to made site in joomla then in drupal.
In short, if you make site for others go with joomla but if you like to make good site for you go with drupal.
