Privacy issue: Personal information in ARIN database?
Hi GFYers,
I'm in this adult biz since 1999. Recently, I noticed that on August 2010, there was a big update at ARIN's site. (www.arin.net) They're publishing more records the the public. The most important part is the record about the registered Customer name & address. Which somehow if you own a dedicate server with 8 consecutive IP addresses or more assigned to you, you have a chance to be in that record. It's because the regulations thing so your hosting company have to register the owner information (you) to ARIN's database.
On most case, it's a business name. I have a business name as well, and used it to do everything all the time. However, with my case, it's my personal name in the new published record, since 2000. I'm fine if it's there since it is nothing. No, it is something!
Recently there are some new born advanced WHOIS websites that do more than the simple ones, they dig into the new ARIN database as well, and use some IP reversing technics to link between all domain names on each IP & ARIN database to publish the data who owns these domains. Which wil result as, publishing your personal info, and all of adult domains you have. One example is (www.dawhois.com) check it out.
This has nothing to the domain name registration, which you can easily access it via WHOIS, since this data is provided by your hosting company directly to ARIN, in order to allocate a newly IP addess range. Changing IP addresses can have a problem as well if the hosting company didn't submit the record change to ARIN.
This privacy issue could happen to anyone. Having a business name still have some risks. (I use the businness name all the time) It a case-by-case issue. If you don't care about it, you can just ignore this post. But if you care, please read more about it and maybe we can share more info.
First, I would recommend you to google with these keyword, "dawhois.com xxx", which xxx represent your domain names or personal name. Second, go to that site and search with your domain names. If the result return is your business name, you're safe, otherwise, you'll be exposed to the public. So far, after trying with many friend's domains, I've seen about 5% chances that your personal info will be there instead of business name.
How to solve it? I have no idea too. Since this data is provided by your web hosting company, you might need to consult with them. Let them update the ARIN records. Includes all the IP addresses you've been used since 2000, or before that. I've already done this. My ARIN records are in the progress of changing and don't know when it will be done, or will ARIN keep the history or not.
When the record(s) is changed, then you will have to monitor all the results in the advanced WHOIS websites that you found your record before. From what I observed, the update range are wide, some will update instantly, some will update anually, some once in few years, or some never update. The later ones will be the pain in the a$$. In that case, you will have to do anything to contact the website owner. Unfortunately, the example website I provided doesn't have any contact information on their web page, and the whois information is protected. In that case, you will need to use "google removal tool" (you can google it for the url) to submit and HOPE that google will understand you and DE-INDEX that particular page(s) that have your personal info on it.
This is what I'm done, all in last week. Nothing changed till now. If you somehow found out the same problem with me or have any advice, please share. Thanks.
