The argument of whether wikileaks is illegal is a very grey area.
The guy that gave them the information was breaking his contractual obligation to not disclose the information. The information is public domain, simply not released into the public domain until such a date has passed (which is mentioned on all of the cables). Therfore, how can it be illegal to print something that is public domain, but just not released 'officially' yet?
I don't think that the US govt has actually officially acknowledged the authenticity of any wikileaks material... they have forbidden all govt employees from reading the information on wikileaks, but that's about all.
