You don't need extract, but it helps. You can still have pretty intense lower level experiences with a lighter, but not matches. You have to take as big a hit as possible and hold it in for as long as possible and when you exhale, if you are still able, take another hit as big as possible and hold that one in as long as possible also. It definitely works.
You can also roll leaves up into a quid and put it in your lip and hold it there for a long while. It's very unpleasant but it works and lasts markedly longer than smoking it and its less intense.
Trips are often very different. People who start smoking it sometimes have a reverse tolerance where it won't do much their first few tries.
When it does work, you can experience cascading colors, seeing beings(often called 'the goddess'), feel like you're in an alternate reality and more.
