A whey to reduce high blood pressure
Quote:
A study conducted at Washington State University has revealed that beverages supplemented with whey-based protein can significantly reduce high blood pressure.
The article, which was published in the International Dairy Journal, reported that daily doses of whey resulted in a six point reduction in the average blood pressure of men and women with hypertension. Led by nutritional biochemist Susan Fluegel, the research team evaluated 71 individuals between the ages of 18 and 26 with elevated systolic and diastolic blood pressures.
"One of the things I like about this is it is low cost," Fluegel said. "Not only that, whey protein has not been shown to be harmful in any way."
The supplements were delivered to study participants through fruit-flavored drinks. Although whey-based protein had a beneficial effect for those with hypertension, it had no adverse effects on those who did not.
Reductions in blood pressure have been associated with a lower risk for cardiovascular disease and up to a 40 percent less chance of having a fatal stroke.
The researchers said that they were enthusiastic about the benefits of whey, a cheese byproduct that may also be cost-effective.
