There are many in the republican party who take her very seriously. They take her seriously enough that they have changed the primary rules for 2012. The republicans have a winner take all primary. If you win the state, you get all the delegates. For the next election they are changing it so that if a state holds its primary before April 1st it will have to split the delegates based on percentage of vote just like the democrats do. So if you win 50% of the vote, you get 50% of the delegates and so on.
They did this because the bible belt states make up about 10 of the first 12 (or so) primaries. Someone like Palin who has a strong base in those states could go in an win a bunch of those states and knock out someone who is more mainstream and who would fair better in the general election. So they changed it. This way even if she wins early, the other candidates could pick up some delegates and stick around a little longer until the election leaves the bible belt.
