By law, one can get a full credit report from each of the three major credit bureaus free once per year at
http://www.annualcreditreport.com
* important: other sites, such as freecreditreport-dot-com are not official - are rip offs - only
http://www.annualcreditreport.com is the real McCoy.
As for getting a credit score - there's no requirement for credit bureaus to provide those free, and, hence, far as I'm aware, none do.
However,
http://www.creditkarma.com provides credit score estimates that tend to be relatively accurate free of charge - many people use them with no issues; it's legit.
With that said, one can guesstimate their credit score themselves by looking at their credit report ... if one has had no missed / late payments, no defaults, reasonable number of credit accounts open for over 5 years, and debt utilization is less than 50%, the person's credit score is likely very good, such as in the mid 700s*
* Or equivalent - there are many different credit scoring systems with somewhat varying scales ... so even if one orders their credit score, it will likely be different than the scoring system the prospective creditor (ie. car loan, mortgage, insurance, etc company) is using - mostly an issue for people whose credit score is borderline good to very good.
In short, begin at
http://www.annualcreditreport.com
Hope this helps.
