Catholicism soaked up a lot of pagan influences. It's a historical fact. It was also a POLITICAL EXPEDIENCY.
"Pure" Bible-based theology began to surface during Martin Luther's time and took several hundred years to progress from that point.
What's interesting is how the abuses perpetrated by POLITICAL Christians are used to justify hating ALL of Christianity.
To be fair, Christianity marked a turning point in the treatment of women and children compared to the Bronze age era. Also, it was British Christians who finally pushed the British Empire to ban slavery on the high seas and the slav trade (much to their loss of profits since the British empire was one of the largest traffickers in the world). Also, a lot of the concepts of Western civilization--equality before the law, the tradition against self-incrimination, the ideal of individualism, UNIVERSAL education, etc were either rooted in or influenced by Christian sensibilities.
Just saying
