Affiliates usually stop promoting a program for good reason. The best way to keep receiving traffic from affiliates over the long term is to always run an honest high converting program for all of your affiliates. The whales may be nice for the short term but they can be easily enticed to go elsewhere and often do. Or perhaps become too expensive to keep.

Affiliate 1- $10,000 a month * 6 months = $60,000
Affiliate 2- $10,000 a year * 10 years = $100,000

Which affiliate really was a better one to have? Now add 100 - 1000 more affiliate #2's (which are far easier to find than Affiliate #1) and what do you get? Sometimes it seems as if some programs don't understand basic business principles. It pays to respect all of your affiliates at all times. FWIW, there's one program I promoted for 12 years. They never gave me any reason until recently not to promote them.
