Facebook is a shit business no matter how you look at it.
They are more popular than Google yet make less money than companies you have probably never even heard of.
Considering their popularity and ubiquity, they should be one of the top earners in the tech field, yet they don't even make enough money to cover their own expansion.
But this is the new way to make money in tech, keep everything secret and cash in off the "funding". Twitter doesn't even bother trying to make money, that's how ludicrous this has all become. It's better to not even try to make money and let people guess how much you could make. Sort of like Sarah Palin running for president. She stays popular as long as she keeps people guessing.
