As odd as it sounds, I read the other day that flocks of birds randomly dying is not all that uncommon. Everything from lightning to firecrackers to airplanes to windmills and yeh, probably chemicals and pollution, too.
Don't wonder my friend, you have dabbed into the world of controlled media. They (CNN, Fox, etc) could have a kidnapped child alert + story every single day if they wanted to, just as the shark attacks. What ever the production team/owners decide is the hot topic is what the masses get for news.
