poles' flip usually occurs at the rate of every 150k or 250k or so years if i'm not mistaken, the last one is way overdue. thing is, its not a sudden flip, pole axis may drift for quiet some time and not necessary symmetrically. also at some point during this phase earth can loose magnetic shield and be open to bombardment of solar radiation for a few years or more.
