There have been at least 50 years of research on psychology of color and hundreds of millions of dollars spent and thousands of millions of test subjects (aka MARKET) involved, I assume there must be a little more to it that just "content converts".

Wrong. Backgrounds do NOT convert if there is no content. Isolated to the background itself... It will NOT sell, no matter what color it is, if there is no content.
CONTENT CONVERTS... The rest only helps or hinders.
His question was "What background color converts the best?", not "What background color will help increase my sales?"
