People I've known who have a propensity to abuse drugs and alcohol in copious excess were fueled by their own financial good fortune. If this guy ever did have a problem, it was probably easy to avoid the issue... not having money makes it fairly easy.
But having the funds must make avoiding it nearly impossible. Walking through airports, attending industry functions, show-biz social functions... it's all available to an extent I'm sure is all entirely new to him.
