Correct, probably the majority of US radio stations would not play the song, and DS provided an alternate version years ago without the faggot reference. That version (AM release with "I want my" prelude cut to length) is on one of their best of CDs.
In the 70s, Paul Simon's Kodachrome was routinely edited by US radio stations to remove the word "crap" -- "All the crap I learned in high school" -- out of fear of action by the FCC.
At least the Canadian radio stations played the original Dire Straits song and had to be told not to. The US is way too full of self-censorship.
