I have a Grandmother.. she's basically legally insane (from Dementia) and does not know who she is, where she is, or even who her own daughters are. Dementia is even worse then Alzheimer's because they can live till 100 while being completely insane, annoying and useless.
Why should a person like that be allowed to live? They are not who they were born anymore. They're just a useless meaningless shell and a burden to everyone.
If you don't even know that you're alive... why be allowed to live?

This is a very touchy subject but quite simple to resolve - in theory.
The main problem stems from our Western Religions that place the Human at the center of creation. In other words, our morals and ethics have us as the reason and ultimate goal of creation. With that in mind, human life/human dignity is above everything else on this planet. Nothing even comes close on the balance.
Example: choosing between killing an 100 year old demented person or 10 African lions. Most people would kill the lions without even thinking about it.
Eventually I believe things will change, and just like we realized that the Earth isn't the center of the universe, we will also realize that we are not the center of life.
