it is stupid as fuck and that information is old, but I was told it by a friend who was a loan officer at the credit union I was a member of back then

Viewing a copy of your credit report is NOT the same as someone running a credit check on you. Every time someone runs a credit check on you it counts as an inquiry on your credit report. Too many inquires count as a negative factor on your credit score. Also all lenders report to all 3 credit bureau's every month. So your credit is updated on a regular basis.
I use
http://www.privacyguard.com/ You can request a new copy of your credit report every month. They send you an email alert if someone runs a credit report or if a new account is opened in your name. And it is very easy to dispute any discrepancies with them. You can call their 800 number and they will take care of all the paper work for you. So you don't have to waste time faxing / mailing letters to the credit bureaus yourself.
